PM Modi- XI Jinping Bilateral Meeting: Prime Minister Narendra Modi And Chinese President Xi Jinping held their first bilateral meeting in the last five years on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Russia on Wednesday (October 23). This meeting lasted for about 50 minutes. This meeting has taken place when India and China have agreed to restore each other’s patrolling rights in the Depsang plain area and Demchok area. This reflects efforts to resolve the conflict along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh.
During the bilateral meeting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “Our meeting is important for global peace and stability. Consensus on the border is welcome. I am confident that we will talk with an open mind and our discussion will be constructive.”

Last meeting in 2019
The two leaders had met at an informal summit in Mahabalipuram in October 2019, a few months before the Chinese incursion in eastern Ladakh led to a military standoff along the LAC. Although they held a few brief meetings in Bali (2022) and Johannesburg (2023), Wednesday’s meeting is the first proper bilateral meeting.
Experts believe that the meeting between PM Modi and Xi Jinping is a major success in ending the deadlock that has been going on for four years.
When did PM Modi and Xi Jinping meet?
Prime Minister Modi’s first conversation with President Xi Jinping took place on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Fortaleza, Brazil. This meeting is considered very important in diplomatic circles, because after this meeting a platform could be created for diplomatic relations between PM Modi and Xi Jinping and the two countries. Then both the countries had talked about increasing cooperation for each other.
Only a few months later, Xi Jinping came on a state visit to India. This date was September 17, 2014. During this visit, both the leaders had sought to increase cooperation in areas like trade, civil nuclear energy and connectivity. However, discussions on economic and cultural relations remained inconclusive due to unresolved border issues between the two countries.
